General Description

American Woman Seeks Brawn & Gentle Touch

If you're feeling cramped, don't like your neighbors and are looking for a change, then come be with me. My name is American Woman and I'm a comfortable, spacious, well-laid out and user-friendly Chris Craft Constellation. I'm bright and cheery with rich Honduran mahogany gleaming throughout. Not many like me were built, gracing the waters at 55 feet.

I have good bone structure and strong integrity despite getting roughed up a bit this past winter. I am in need of some TLC. After four years of getting built up and feeling better, I am being let go and released to another in "As Is" condition. My captain hurt her back. So, I'm now up for grabs and am available to live with. I was born in 1957. I'm being offered at $35,000 obo. Below are my specs and references.

HISTORY
Four years ago she was hauled out and had the bottom cleaned, painted w/4 coats of Micron CSC, props polished and zincs replaced. The transom, chine, stuffing box, lazarette coaming and upper two planks astern were replaced. Two brand new propane tanks, one propane sniffer w/alarm and auto shut off, three bilge pumps and panel, one water pump, shower pump and a 35-gallon holding tank were installed with new sanitation hoses. The holding tank has never been used and is still in mint condition. New thru hulls and valves were also installed.

This documented vessel is a production built motor yacht to the highest standards of Honduran mahogany planks over sawn frames with internal seam battens for the topsides, sawn and bent frames with double planking for the bottom, bronze fastened.
It is a bull nose design.

Bamboo plank flooring with bronzed hatch trimming installed throughout the interior, new stationary smoked safety auto glass was installed (while the windows were being replace, I had the interior frames epoxyed to prevent water soaking and wicking through), new mahogany wood blinds were also installed in the main saloon. Many new outlets and all new AC wiring were installed throughout the vessel, including new wiring for the running lights. The Webasto 2010 diesel fired radiant heat system has new hot water supply and return piping. This system needs to be hooked up once again. It was disassembled to complete a project and never hooked back up. The exterior cabin top has new fiberglass but needs to be painted and have the handrails put back in place. The fabric valances for main saloon were removed and mahogany ones were custom made. These need to have final coat of varnish and be installed. Custom mahogany mullion trim and molding strips for the headliner seams to be installed. One headliner panel needs to be stretched and stapled back into place. This one panel was partially taken down to allow for the new running light wiring.

EXTERIOR
Aft of the pilothouse are wing doors and a full width hard enclosure and a 6' square skylight over the helm. This was the future Martini Lounge and Game Room. During my ownership this section remained covered up with heavy duty canvas tarp. This section of the boat was an after-market add on by the previous owners and was intended to come down anyway due to the softness of the wood and poor cambering. However, during a recent storm this section sustained some damage: the canvas tarp was ripped in half and thrown into the bay but not before cracking the small section of window on the starboard side; 6' square mahogany framed skylight blew out and disappeared in the 97 mph winds; the port side window panel blew into the pilothouse in one piece; and, the side walls have become completely soft and wobbly. Plywood is up in place until the day comes you turn this area into a gathering place for friends and family, complete with a refreshment bar. Despite the damage, it has not affected the structural integrity of the boat.

During the previous owners' possession, the bull nose received some damage. Three shipwrights quoted $3500 to repair this section. Git Rot was poured into the soft areas to prevent any further softening of the plank until I was ready to repair.

The port side shore power outlet was dangling when I purchased her. Again, to prevent further wear and tear, I had it held in place on a temporary basis until I finished with the more immediate needs.

The exterior decking is gorgeous mahogany with bronze stanchions and footings which sparkle like gold when finished. It was during this time my back gave way and I couldn't finish the work so to protect the deck and the boat, I had a peel and stick roofing material applied to the deck. Yes, it's ugly and it was disheartening to say the least to put this on but it prevented rain from coming in through the incomplete refinish work.

INTERIOR LAYOUT
The forwardmost compartment is a forepeak locker containing the anchor rode. Aft of this is a stateroom with upper and lower berths to port, storage and a hatch in the overhead. A Splindide washer/dryer combo unit is port side. This leaks. It has been said it needs a washer. But no plumber on board and laundry facilities were at the top of the ramp so I never bothered with it.

Aft of this is a full width galley, complete with a propane cook stove (currently has camping stove resting atop because the new propane tanks noted earlier in description were moved to the stern while the deck was being refinished. They were never hooked back up) freezer under the galley floor, double stainless steel sink with garbage disposal, a bar sink and a two door fridge.

From here steps that lift for engine room access lead up and aft to the main saloon. In the saloon are three hatches for access to the engine room below. Down and aft is a passageway that leads aft past the crew's quarters on the port side and a head on the starboard side. There were two bunks in the crew's quarters but I removed one and installed a multi-hardwood table top and two-drawer filing cabinet for an office area.

Fully aft is a master stateroom with an en suite head on the starboard side and two full-size lockers on port and starboard--one has been cedar lined. The stateroom originally had two berths (port and starboard) with a storage chest in the center. I joined the two berths and turned them sideways, creating a queen size berth w/head at port side. I refashioned the center storage unit into custom built-ins with small lockers at either end for the starboard side. The original draw pulls are still available but left off because I wanted to install something more suitable. I also installed mahogany strips in a vertical formation with 12" in between along the back wall where the original storage unit was.

KNOWN PROBLEMS
As for leaks, yes she does leak some but not all the time and not every time it rains, nor heavily. For the full four years I've lived aboard I can honestly say where they originate from. One was the deck, one is from the scupper drains, and the other is from the seals around the windshields, hatches and portholes. They need to be replaced. Easy enough, just time consuming. These need to be replaced because some are just old and dried up, while others were painted over by the previous owners rendering them useless.
